A Greg Andrews hat-trick sent Leatherhead into the Second Round Qualifying of The FA Cup with Budweiser.
He gave his side the lead against Tooting & Mitcham on 16 minutes, only for the visitors to hit back immediately.
But Andrews tucked away two second-half penalties to see the hosts through.
However, the Terrors started well with the opening chances falling to summer recruit Edoado Ciani, but Tanners ‘keeper Matt Reed was on hand to deny the early shots at goal, including an effort into the ground which Ciani perhaps should have tucked away.
Leatherhead’s powerful striker Tommy Hutchings put a halt to Tooting’s dominant spell of possession by outmuscling the opposition defence and firing a stinging shot at Nic Taylor.
The home team took the lead juts after the quarter of an hour mark when Andrews picked up a clearance near the edge of the Tooting box and curled a fantastic effort into the corner of the net, leaving Taylor helpless.
But Roberto Forzoni’s side restored parity just 60 seconds later. Captain Lee Hall took the ball down on the edge of the box and slipped the ball through to Sol Pinnock who slid the ball under the onrushing Reed.
Five minutes before the break, Hutchings nearly capitalised as Tooting failed to properly clear a free-kick. He got a shot away at the near post but Taylor clawed the ball off the line.
Leatherhead continued to press for a second goal after the interval and defender Adam Gross almost found it when Tooting & Mitcham’s Taylor collided with one of his own defenders inside the box. Taylor was faced with an empty goal but the angle was against him and the ball went wide.
On the hour mark Hutchings had another opportunity to score. This time it was substitute Kevin Terry who provided the chance, finding Hutchings on the edge of the box, but his bending effort thumped against far post.
Andrews eventually put Leatherhead into the lead after 70 minutes, when the referee spotted a handball on the edge of the box. A penalty was awarded and the would-be hero sent the ‘keeper the wrong way with the spot kick.
The tie was settled just ten minutes later, again from 12 yards and Andrews once again duly obliged.
The away team were reduced to ten men in added time but the game was already beyond them.
