Metropolitan Police finally edged past plucky Dereham Town at the second time of asking to book a place in The FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying.

Jonte Smith's fine effort after 16 minutes and Ty Smith's late strike were enough for Jim Cooper's men. But Eastern Counties Premier Division Dereham, who reached this stage for the first time in their history, provided a firm test.

Met Police's reward for battling past the Norfolk side in the FATV Road to Wembley tie is a clash at South Park, one of the lowest ranked teams left in the competition.

And now a place in the First Round Proper and the chance to face a league club is just one game away.

The first meeting between the teams finished in a 1-1 draw at Dereham on Saturday. Shaun Bammant's second half strike cancelling out Craig Brown's opener at Aldiss Park to force a replay.

Isthmian Premier Division side Met Police had a secret weapon in this tie, with physio Paul Barrowcliff's Cup pedigree well-known.

Barrowcliff tasted FA Cup glory as a non-League player himself during his days with the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Stevenage and Sutton.

It was Jonte Smith's strike early on that gave them the best possible start bursting through the visiting defence before clipping in from a wide angle to put the hosts 1-0 up.

But Dereham were not overawed, with Nick Howell particularly impressive for Matt Henman's side in front of a crowd of 191.

However, they could not find the breakthrough in the first half and after the interval, the Met pushed forward in search of a killer second - and only a sublime save from Andy Wilton denied Howard Newton on 64 minutes.

Ty Smith then sealed the match in the dying minutes to end Dereham's dream and set up the trip to South Park on 20 October.
