Hayes & Yeading United, who reached the First Round Proper last season, were beaten by a strong and focused AFC Wimbledon side at Church Road last night.
Two headers from corners put the visitors in the driving seat at 2-0 going into the break and a further goal on 68 minutes virtually ended the contest.
George Isaac played wide on the left for Hayes in the last round, but was this time half of a strike force that included Daniel Wishart, the two-goal star in their 4-0 victory over Welling United. Wishart was limping in the first couple of minutes last night, apparently not as a result of any kind of challenge, and AFC Wimbledon might have taken an early lead when Joe Jackson diverted left-back Danny Carter’s shot towards the other corner of the goal and ‘keeper Alex Tokarczyk was at full stretch to save one-handed.
Wishart quickly ran off his earlier problem as Hayes began to match the visitors all over the pitch. The first goal was important in this high-energy encounter and it arrived on 24 minutes, Dons’ centre-back Callum Welburn glancing in a right-wing corner from the edge of the six-yard box. Moments earlier a similar effort from the same player had been expertly palmed away by Tokarczyk.
Wishart had once got goal-side of visiting ‘keeper Jack Turner, but the latter bravely dived to grab the ball on the ground and continued to keep Hayes at bay in an impressive display. In the last minute of the half Rhys Turner’s header from another corner, this time from the left, flew into the far top corner for the Dons and Hayes were up against it after that.
The home side tried hard to pull a goal back, but Turner continued to thwart the lively Wishart and a third goal clinched the win. Matt Harmsworth, the No.9, burst through the middle and held off two flimsy challenges before shooting left-footed into the bottom corner. They could have had a couple more after that too.
