Christian Burgess’ 89th-minute winner sent Bishop's Stortford into the First Round Proper of The FA Youth Cup at Woodside Park on Thursday evening.

Burgess sent a glancing header from a free-kick into the far corner of the net to seal a home tie against Marlow.

The game had seen destined for extra-time until the late drama, and on the balance of play that would have probably been fair, with both goalkeepers the star man for their respective sides.

Francis Adu-Boadu should have done better with Blues’ first real chance, while at the other end Ted Llewellyn did well to clear the ball after Oliver Boue had broken through the hosts’ defence.

Adu-Boadu made amends for his earlier miss when he opened the scoring in the 12th minute, slotting into the corner of the net after a good cross from Sheldon Sellars.

The lead only last five minutes, when Samuel Oki fired a low shot from 20 yards from the edge of the box.

Stortford skipper, Chris Sergent, saw a long range effort go just over in the 24th minute and the home side finished the half strongly with Joseph Wright in the visitors’ goal tipping over Sellars’ free-kick for a corner, with Harold Craton firing wide with the final kick of the half.

Charles Gregory replaced Adu-Boadu at half-time, but the striker only last ten minutes before suffering what appeared to be a foot injury and was replaced by Mark Robinson. After Burgess went close with a free-kick, Robinson saw a shot flash just wide of the goal.

Simeon Adewale saw a shot crash against the bar in the 68th minute as Clapton’s speedy frontline again troubled the Blues, but almost immediately, Burgess forced a great save from Wright with a 20-yard effort.

Blues 'keeper Bert Greenwood and Wright both pulled off good saves to keep the score level before Burgess struck to break the visitors’ hearts and send Stortford into the competition proper.
