Round up
The FA Vase Second Round Qualifying witnessed a number of casualties this weekend as various teams saw their dreams of a cup run extinguished.
Danny Hinshelwood, responsible for walking Brian Clough’s dog in his Nottingham Forest days, was one of the disappointed managers as his Selsey side lost 3-2 to Camberley Town of the Combined Counties League.
Camberley will be hoping for a similar cup run to the one they enjoyed in the 1985-86 season, when they reached the quarter final before losing to eventual winners Halesowen Town.
There was never any danger of Blackstones failing to progress as they produced a 9-0 demolition job on Radford FC. The Stamford side were helped by some desperately poor defending from the visitors, but their finishing was clinical.
The journey home for Tividale’s fans was far more enjoyable after they defeated West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division rivals Shawbury United 3-1. A tight contest was expected, but Anthony Cox’s brace ensured a smooth passage for Dean Whitehouse’s side into the First Round Proper.
The First Round will be strongly represented by Daventry after both the town’s clubs enjoyed resounding wins.
Daventry Town made light work of Stowmarket Town, crushing their opponents 5-0, while Daventry United enjoyed a similar success, cruising to a 6-1 win over a shell-shocked Thetford Town.
Despite these heavy beatings, the second round threw up a number closely fought encounters, none better than a 4-4 thriller between Chichester City Utd and South Park.
Chichester, of the Sussex County League Reserve West Division, must now travel to Reigate to face their opponents in a replay on Tuesday night.
A replay will not be necessary for Bradford Town, who produced a superb performance on their travels to defeat Cheltenham Saracens 4-1. Bradford will now be looking for a good run in The Vase.
Another club seeking publicity was Beckenham Town, who failed in an attempt to sign ex-England forward Teddy Sheringham ahead of their clash with Banstead Athletic. Despite the undoubted benefits such a signing would bring, Town proved they could cope without him by recording a comfortable 2-0 victory.
