Coundon Conservative became FA Carlsberg Sunday Cup winners on Sunday as they brushed aside Lebeq Tavern Courage 5-0 at Anfield.
It was only the first season in the competition for the Durham based outfit, but, after overcoming a number of tough tests along the way, they put on a fine display in Liverpool to clinch the honours.
The game couldn't have started any better, though, when only two minutes had passed, skipper Kevin Ellison struck from range and his swerving effort beat Amin Jones low to his right.
Man of the match Andy Thompson scored the first of his two goals just before half-time. Ellison slipping the striker through on goal and he did the rest, tucking away neatly into the corner.
After the break, Thompson made it 3-0 with a well-taken header into the famous Kop end and was able to celebrate right in front of the travelling Coundon support.
Substitute Steve Johnson came on to seal the match for Coundon and grab himself a brace. His first prodding home from inside the six-yard box after Jones had failed to deal with Thompson's low shot through a crowded area.
His second was a neat finish to top off a fine performance. Straight from the goal kick, the ball evaded the Lebeq defence who took a high line on the halfway line.
Johnson gambled to latch onto the loose ball inside the Lebeq half and he carried it with confidence into the box before going round Jones and slotting into the empty net.
Ellison was delighted when he spoke to TheFA.com after the match: "This means everything to us. It's the first time we've entered the competition and we've had a hard run," he said.
"Every round we seemed to have drawn the favourites, but we've kept plugging away and winning games when we were down and have ended up lifting The Cup.
"We have a great set of fans, they've been brilliant. We've had buses from all around the area, and Coundon's only a small village. It's a been a brilliant day for everyone.
"The celebrations will go long into the night and all day tomorrow as well!"
