In a pulsating contest, which saw Eastbourne Borough reduced to nine men after both Dan Smith and Andy Atkin were sent off, United prevailed thanks to Matt York’s brace in extra time.
The home side took the lead after just 12 minutes through Paul Armstrong’s penalty, before Joe Vines equalised just before the half-hour mark. Gary Elphick then fired the Conference side ahead before Alan McLeod brought United level four minutes before the break.
With the game forced into extra-time, the visitors took the initiative after Atkin was sent off for a professional foul, allowing York to score from the spot.
York then fired home another penalty just three minutes later following a handball, before Ben Austin pulled a goal back with ten to go. But once Smith was given his marching orders for an off the ball incident, Eastbourne’s Cup hopes were left in tatters.
Elsewhere, AFC Wimbledon set up a London derby clash with League One Millwall after seeing off Crawley Town. Jon Main put the home side ahead and despite Jefferson Louis equalising mid-way through the first half for Crawley, goals from Luke Moore and Danny Kedwell won it for Terry Brown’s men.
AFC Telford will host League Two side Lincoln City in the First Round Proper after cruising to a 4-0 win over Blyth Spartans. Andy Brown scored twice, while Liam Blakeman and Phil Trainer were also on target for the Bucks.
Barrow produced an impressive performance to see off Chester City 4-0 at the Deva Stadium and set up a home tie with Eastleigh. Andrew Bond opened the scoring after 73 minutes before Jason Walker added a second just two minutes later. Bond was on target again just 120 seconds later before Andy Cook rounded off the win.
Matt Tubbs hit a hat-trick as Salisbury City saw off Farnborough Town 4-2 to book their place in the First Round. Despite trailing 2-1 at the break, the hosts roared back to set up an away tie at Accrington Stanley.
Conference North side Fleetwood Town pulled off a famous victory after defeating Kidderminster 3-1. Gareth Seddon fired the home side ahead before further goals from Sean Clancy and Nathan Pond booked Town’s place in the First Round and a clash with League Two Northampton.
Jean-Paul Marna hit a dramatic late winner to give Kettering a 1-0 win at Redditch. Marna’s goal came in the final minute of extra-time as the Conference side claimed the right to take on Hartlepool in the next round.
Elsewhere, Lowestoft Town face a trip to Wrexham following their 4-2 home win over Gloucester.
