Ash Taylor, the 20-year-old Tranmere Rovers defender who has been with the club since he was ten, scored the 83rd-minute goal that took them through to the Second Round Proper last night. Rovers now have a home tie with Aldershot Town in ten days’ time.

It was a tremendous result for the Rovers team and their caretaker boss Les Parry. They have lost seven out of eight away fixtures in League One and only managed two goals. With Orient also struggling in the bottom five of the same division, it wasn’t expected to be a classic. But the desire to win on the part of both sides was clearly visible, with a Third Round tie against a Premiership giant potentially two victories away.

The first half was undistinguished. The O’s attacked in numbers on several occasions without troubling Rovers’ on-loan ‘keeper Luke Daniels too much, while the visitors didn’t manage anything that looked like a shot at goal. As the passing by both sides became more wayward, there was a lot of fidgeting in seats and under-the-breath murmurings, and the second half simply had to be better.

It was better, with Rovers finally starting to look more of a threat going forward. There was a good chance at either end, O’s substitute Ryan Jarvis thumping in a right-footer from just inside the box that a leaping Daniels beat away with his fists and Rovers’ Charlie Barnett hitting a rising drive that had Glenn Morris at full stretch. A goal was looking more and more likely, with both sides more purposeful as they broke forward, but the question was whether it would arrive in normal time.

With seven minutes remaining, right-back Shaleum Logan pumped a high ball into the O’s box and as the defence hesitated, Taylor flicked the ball in from close range. Rovers remained solid until the end, although they suffered a scare when the ball ended up in their net after a back-pedalling Daniels had been impeded. Referee Woolmer, right up with play, spotted the offence.
