Winning clubs will receive £30,000 from The FAClick here for all the Second Round ResultsEastwood Town stunned League Two leaders Wycombe Wanderers as they booked their place alongside the country’s elite in the Third Round of The FA Cup sponsored by E.ON with a famous 2-0 win at Coronation Park.
Lindon Meikle and substitute Peter Knox were the heroes for the Northern Premier Division side as they chalked up the biggest result of the club’s history.
Club Vice-President Simon Twells says they are now dreaming of a trip to Old Trafford in the next round of the competition
“Manchester United away would do very nicely,” he said. “This result is a dream come true for everyone at the club."
Twells was buoyed by this outcome which has put his club firmly on the map - and has no doubts they were worthy winners.
“We probably outplayed them in every area,” he enthused. “We kept our shape, we kept out discipline - we were superb.
“A day like this makes everyone’s hard work worth the effort. All the players are in demand by the press now, but it has been one of those days. It’s amazing.”
Wycombe arrived on top of the League Two table having yet to taste defeat, but they were caught cold in difficult conditions against the Nottinghamshire side on an afternoon that belonged to Paul Cox and his Cup kings.
The fired-up non-leaguers started the game much the brighter team, with Russell Cooke seeing his header hit the crossbar within two minutes.
But the Chairboys reacted in turn, slowly enforcing their domination of proceedings. Lewwis Spence went close on 16 minutes, hitting the woodwork with a thunderous strike from 25 yards out.
Peter Taylor’s team were punished for failing to take advantage of their early possession as Meikle sent the Town contingent of fans into celebration when he unleashed a curling left-footed shot from 25 yards, leaving Scott Shearer flat-footed in the Wycombe goal.
Wanderers showed signs of improvement in the second period, with Spence again coming closest just after the hour.
The 21-year-old stole in at the back post, but had his effort well saved by Shane Redmond.
Substitute Magno Vieira sparked life into the visitors, his lightning pace causing all kinds of trouble as he very nearly drew Taylor’s Chairboys level, but he could only direct his shot wide after connecting with Lewis Hunt’s cross after 65 minutes.
The League Two leaders continued to turn the screw as Tommy Doherty saw his shot cleared off the line by Mark Hume with the pressure pouring in on the Eastwood goal.
As desperation to avoid Cup disappointment set in for Wanderers, they reverted to an all-out attacking formation – but things only got worse as Knox grabbed a second goal just 60 seconds after coming off the bench, Andy Todd picking him out inside the six-yard box to wrap up a fine win.
