Carlisle United proved too strong for League One rivals Norwich on a blustery evening at Brunton Park.

Vincent Pericard, Kevan Hurst and Richard Keogh were all on target as the hosts booked their place in the Third Round Proper against a below-par Norwich side.

The Canaries’ Grant Holt equalised Pericard’s opening goal, only for Carlisle to cut away with an impressive second-half display.

Norwich cruised through the First Round Proper with a 7-1 drubbing of non league Paulton Rovers but today found themselves up coming up short against stronger opposition.

The Norfolk side struggled in the gloomy conditions and soon found themselves behind to Vincent Pericard’s 12th minute header.

The former Stoke and Portsmouth frontman evaded markers to head beyond Norwich goalkeeper Fraser Forster for his fifth goal in just 10 Carlisle appearances.

But Paul Lambert’s side, fourth in League One, were soon back in the tie.

The tricky Wes Hoolahan danced through the Carlisle defence before crossing to Holt, who cleverly headed beyond the advancing Adam Collin with 25 minutes on the clock.

But, after an even first-period, Carlisle need just 14 seconds of the second-half to re-establish their advantage.

Pericard burst down the right channel before finding Hurst unmarked and the midfielder cooly slotted past Forster.

And Carlisle made sure of their place in the Third Round Proper 18 minutes from full-time when centre-back Keogh headed Graham Kavanagh’s cross beyond the helpless Forster.
