The FA can confirm that Wembley Stadium has been shortlisted by UEFA for hosting either the 2010 or 2011 Champions League Final.

Wembley will be up against the Olympiastadion in Berlin, the Fussball Arena in Munich, the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid and the Estadio Mestalla in Valencia.

The selection was made on a range of criteria including stadium capacity, infrastructure, facilities and security arrangements, along with accommodation and transport links and rotation between host national associations.

A UEFA delegation will inspect the stadium before the end of the year as part of their bid assessment, with a final decision expected in late March 2008.

FA Chief Executive Brian Barwick said: "We're delighted that UEFA have shortlisted Wembley for both finals. It is recognition of Wembley's place among the very best football stadiums in the world, as well as its unique tradition and history. It is a stadium for the big games and one that will surely inspire the continent's finest players."

James Bidwell, Chief Executive of Visit London, said: "London has admirably demonstrated its ability to host major sporting events both in the past and more recently with the Grand Depart of the Tour De France and in securing the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Wembley is a world class stadium in a world class city.

"We are thrilled that the bid has gone a stage further and relish the prospect of the Champions League Final returning to the capital once again."

The old Wembley Stadium staged the European Cup Final five times, most recently in 1992 when Barcelona beat Sampdoria in the season before the competition became the Champions League. The last time the Champions League Final was staged in England was in 2003 at Old Trafford, when AC Milan defeated Juventus.
