Wembley needs a Head Groundsmanager to tend the pitch at 'the venue of legends'.
Thursday, 21 April 2005.
With just over a year until the new national stadium officially opens, the search to find the UK's most skilled Head Groundsmanager to look after the famous Wembley turf has begun.
Since its creation, Wembley has been a sporting icon the world over, and when the new 90,000 capacity stadium opens in 2006 the playing surface will, as ever, be the centre-piece.
The person appointed to be Head Groundsmanager will need to maintain a playing surface that is worthy of ‘the venue of legends’ as Wembley hosts England Internationals, The FA Cup Semis and Final, The Challenge Cup Final and numerous other music and sporting events.
Patrick Gosset, Chief Executive of The Institute of Groundsmanship, commented: "This is undoubtedly the most prestigious grounds management position in the country.
"We are very fortunate, in that we have considerable strength in depth when it comes to world class groundsmen.
"I am confident that whoever is lucky enough to be appointed to this exciting role will do England and Wembley Stadium a great service."
The hallowed turf is currently being developed by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI), having been selected from 250 different varieties undergoing testing at the Institute.
Head of construction, Robert Everett, added: "We employed the latest technology to grow the Wembley turf and the new groundsman will be a key member of the pitch team, contributing a high level of skill and technical experience.
"We are looking forward to working closely with the groundsman and I feel confident that we have produced a turf that the nation can be proud of."
Candidates will need passion, 5-10 years of experience at ground maintenance, together with an unparalleled understanding of different types of turf and pitch construction.
Your attention to detail and desire to deliver the perfect pitch event after event will set you apart from your peers. Your commitment will inspire your attendance at big occasions day or night.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to deliver the most famous pitch at the greatest stadium in the world.
