Reds duo support World Cup bid

Wayne Rooney and David Gill back England's bid to stage the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

FA Board member and Manchester United Chief Executive, David Gill, and Reds' forward, Wayne Rooney have given their unequivocal support to England’s bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2018 or 2022.

After celebrating United’s Premier League title success at the weekend, Gill and Rooney were both present at Wembley Stadium for the official World Cup bid launch.

Rooney represented England at the 2006 World Cup in Germany and articulated his desire to feature at the event in nine years time – one that he hopes will be staged on home soil.

"I think it would be unbelievable to play in a World Cup in England," he said. "It is a great feeling with the pride and passion the players and fans have.

"Hopefully I will still be playing at that time and hopefully we can bring the World Cup back to England and we can do well."

Gill furthered Rooney’s comments highlighting England’s ability to stage such high-profile matches.

"The whole excitement around the bid is great," Gill enthused. "Hopefully everyone in the country will get behind the bid and I am looking forward to playing a small role in the team.

"I have spoken to all of the clubs and they are united in getting the World Cup here.

"It will be great for all of us if England can host the World Cup; from the Premier League through to the grassroots," he continued.

"We can and will put on a great show; we've got great grounds and the experience of putting on big games such as internationals, Champions League semi-finals and Finals.

"There is also the legacy aspect and we have plans to do a lot for football around the world."
