The FA

When was The FA formed?

First in our series of ten Football Association FAQs.

The FA was formed on 26 October 1863. Representatives of clubs playing different kinds of ‘football’ met at the Freemason’s Tavern in Great Queen Street, London, for the purpose of framing a set of rules whereby they could all play the same game. Uniformity was the aim.

The eleven clubs who became The FA’s founder members were Barnes, Blackheath, Charterhouse, Perceval House, Kensington School, War Office, Crystal Palace, Blackheath Proprietary School, The Crusaders, Forest and No Names.

It was not without more than one resignation that The FA’s rules were eventually agreed upon and published in December.
