York celebrated quite possibly the greatest week in their history by securing promotion back to the Football League on Sunday afternoon.

In the last seven days, the club has won The FA Trophy, gained permission to build a new stadium and on Sunday they defeated Luton Town at Wembley in the Conference Premier Play-Off Final.

However, it didn't start so well as Gary Mills' men went behind after just two minutes when Andre Gray fired in Robbie Willmott's cross.

York had to wait 25 minutes before they restored parity, with Ashley Chambers' low shot beating Mark Tyler in the Luton goal.

The York fans were hugely outnumbered at Wembley, but they created a stunning roar at the start of the start of the second half when Matty Blair, the match winner in the Semi-Final second leg against Mansfield and also a scorer in The FA Trophy Final, prodded home from close range to score his second goal at Wembley in successive weeks.

Larne Oyebanjo launched a long throw into the area, Jason Walker flicked the ball on and Blair advanced a yard past the last defender and tucked home.

Luton fans will be furious when they look back on the game, as the winning goal should have been ruled out for offside.

James Meredith could have made it 3-1 late on but he flicked his close-range header over the bar and Oyebanjo cleared an effort off the line from John Kissock to ensure his side held on.

The Minstermen were relegated in 2004 and were beaten finalists at the same stage two years ago. The victory ends an eight-year wait for them to get back into the Football League.

They can now look forward to laying their football at a higher level and at a new ground gained approval from council chiefs for a 6,000-seater stadium at Monks Cross.
