The power of the mind
By Daniel Freedman. Friday, 31 October 2003.
Have you ever wanted to know more about how you can utilise the power of the mind to help your football?....The FA will host its Psychology for Football Conference on Thursday...
Taking place at the Walkers Stadium, the new home of Leicester City, the event is open to the general public and highly recommended for anyone involved in coaching or with an interest in sports psychology.
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is a huge believer in the value of psychology in football. He told us: "I have always been interested in it (psychology). As a manager you are some sort of a psychologist yourself. All coaches are.
"Old-fashioned people feel that psychologists are for sick people, but of course footballers have many problems. I think the future is very big in this area.
"I have used it myself and it has helped me switch off away from work. I learned how to relax and to sleep, through psychology".
This year a host of experts, including the England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence and Crewe manager Dario Gradi, have been lined up as speakers.
