But the defining factor for me is that I simply love the game and I still want to be a part of it!

Was playing the sport an advantage or disadvantage?

Playing football before taking up refereeing gave me a better insight to the game and I started to see why all those referees were blowing their whistles at me for the last 14 years.

I think if you hadn’t played the sport before you’d have the benefit of starting from scratch but if you’ve played, know and love the sport, you’ll begin to understand it even more.

The Course and what I enjoyed

The course consists of 4 modules, a written test and an oral test. Module 1 is a welcome and introduction with the facts of the role of the referee, equipment, playing field and the duration of the game.

Then it starts to become more interesting with module 2 concentrating on throw-ins, goal kicks and when the ball’s in and out of play.

Module 3 tackles the most heated topic of the game, offside and module 4 covers foul play and when it’s the right decision to give a direct or indirect free kick and when it’s right to give a yellow or red card.

The bit I really enjoyed about the course was the discussions. My instructor was never afraid of talking you through the reason behind a decision and giving you examples of play.

I personally sat there and began to regret all the stick I had given referees over the years and the silly thing was you began to see logic! I started to see the game not only as a player spectator but also through the eyes of the man in black.

My experience so far!

I have now been the man in the middle for 13 competitive matches and have enjoyed every minute of it.

A few cards have been shown but as long as you manage the game well and you’re confident in your decisions, the game’s enjoyable.

I think that refereeing has all the enjoyment factors 1) you still get to be a part of the best game in the world 2) you still get the banter 3) Its healthy 4) you get a paid!

Oh, and if you’re on the park and you see a ref making some great decisions in red boots, That’s me!
