Recently The Football Association announced that football is now the most popular female sport. This has been a major factor not only in participation but has also raised the interest in getting involved as a Referee.
There has been a huge growth in the number of females now taking up the whistle. Two years ago we had 450 registered female referees, now we have 1097 that’s a growth of 144%!
These figures have been achieved in several ways; Counties have held:
- Women only ‘Introduction to Refereeing’ evenings
- Women only Referee Courses
- Young Officials Programmes run through Active Sports, which are then linked to Referee Academies, ESFA and Local Authority Competitions.
- Practical Basic Referee Training Courses
- Current female Match Officials have encouraged others to join them
