While some clubs observed a minute's silence on Saturday, the idea of applauding and celebrating the contribution made by Best was also adopted by many, including at Upton Park.

The idea proved to be a popular way to acknowledge the fantastic memories we all have of Best and two footballing legends also paid their tribute on Sunday.

Sir Trevor Brooking, former West Ham and England midfielder and now The FA's Director of Football Development, and Best's former teammate, Sir Bobby Charlton, both said a few words before the match between West Ham and Manchester United.

Sir Trevor told TheFA.com how it all came about:
"There were different views about the appropriate way to honour the memory of someone as exciting as George and a number of people felt that it would be more fitting to have a minute's applause rather than silence," he said.

"From the West Ham point of view they knew how important it was that Manchester United were playing their first game since the death of one of their all-time great players.

"We contacted Manchester United about it and they agreed with the idea.

"With Bobby coming down for the game we both felt it would be good for us to say something about George before the game.

"He gave everyone in the footballing world such a thrill that I think it was fitting that we showed our appreciation of his contribution with applause, I think everyone agreed on it and it was a poignant occasion.

"Our fans have a deep admiration for players with great flair and natural talent," he added. "Sir Alex Ferguson even said that he could not have picked a more appropriate place to play their first game after the sad news of Friday lunchtime."

The game finished with a 2-1 victory for Manchester United and a starring performance from Wayne Rooney. Sir Trevor felt that the occasion will be remembered with joy by everyone involved.

"Apart from the result I think West Ham fans should be very proud of what happened on Sunday," he added. "It was a moving tribute and I am proud of the supporters.

"Of course Wayne Rooney has played brilliantly and people start to compare him with George.

"West Ham have also tried to play football in the right way and Sunday was a prime example of two sides attacking each other and it was a joy to watch."
