The FA is deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Fulham and England captain Johnny Haynes at the age of 71.
Chairman Geoff Thompson said: "This is a sad day for English football. Johnny Haynes was a wonderful player, a tremendous servant for club and country and a great ambassador for the game. Our deepest sympathies are with his family and friends."
Famed for his passing ability from the inside-forward position, Haynes won 56 caps for England, scoring 18 goals, and captained the national team on his last 22 appearances.
He made a goal-scoring international debut in a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland on 2 October 1954. His last appearance for England came at the 1962 World Cup in Chile against Brazil in a 1-3 quarter-final defeat.
Haynes became captain of his country in 1960, and a year later he captained England to the Home International trophy, after a 9-3 win over Scotland at Wembley.
He was the first £100-a-week player and spent his entire club career with Fulham, totalling 594 matches and 146 goals.
