Mr Thompson said he was 'greatly honoured' to be asked to continue for a second term as Chairman. Mr Thompson was first elected as acting chairman in 1999 before being handed a four year term of office in 2000. He will serve as FA Chairman until 2008.

Earlier this year Mr Thompson was re-elected to the UEFA Executive Committee, on which he has sat since 2000, with a massive vote and yesterday he told FA councillors:' I will do everything within my powers to promote English football both at home and abroad.'

In yesterday's elections to The FA board, Roger Burden and Peter Hough were re-elected and Mike Rawding from East Riding was voted on to replace the retiring Alan Turvey as national game representatives alongside Ray Kiddell, David Henson and Barry Bright.

The Premier League representatives will be FAPL chairman Dave Richards, Arsenal's David Dein, Bolton's Phil Gartside and Southampton's Rupert Lowe. The Football League will continue to be represented by David Sheepshanks of Ipswich and Peter Heard of Colchester.
