The FA and Northumbria Police are asking soccer fans and the public to help them identify people who invaded the pitch during the England match against Turkey at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland...

Police have photographs of 29 men who ran onto the pitch during two incidents, each time England scored a goal during the match on April 2, 2003.

Northumbria Police Assistant Chief Constable David Warcup said: "By taking action now to identify those who invaded the pitch we aim to send a clear message that such behaviour is unacceptable and will be dealt with firmly and appropriately.

"The highly visible actions of a small minority of individuals tarnished the image of the game and the name of England supporters while a global audience watched these deplorable scenes on televisions across the world.

"Northumbria Police is working closely with The FA to bring the full range of sanctions available to us against these individuals who bring the game into disrepute."

The act of going onto the playing area is an offence under the Football Offences Act 1991 and may result in a fine of up to £1,000. Applications may also be made to magistrates courts for Football Banning Orders which prohibit individuals from travelling to all football matches in England and Wales and specified matches outside of England and Wales for a minimum of three years.

The FA Director for Marketing and Communications Paul Barber, said: "Pitch invasions are dangerous to both players and other spectators. The FA will not tolerate further incidents of this kind and will be fully supportive of the police in their efforts to arrest people who commit such an offence.

"Furthermore, The FA will impose its own ban for life from FA matches, on any supporters who invade the pitch. Also, in addition to any action the police and courts may take, The FA will press other football authorities to impose similar punishments."

Pictures of people who invaded the pitch are now available on the Northumbria Police website at www.northumbria.police.uk/football
