Boys in Brazil

As part of the Royal Navy FA's Defence Diplomacy policy, HMS Nottingham called at Forteleza and Rio Janeiro in Brazil en route for duty in the South Atlantic.

In Forteleza, members of the ship's football team visited two local orphanages and carried out some DIY to improve the living conditions of the children.

They also played football against local football teams and ran coaching sessions under the leadership of the ship's Physical Training instructor Kev Green, presenting the children with England kit and balls.

The ship then sailed on to Rio de Janeiro where some of the crew helped to renovate and decorate the 'Task Brazil Centre' which is run by a charity for homeless children.

The team installed surveillance cameras and a telephone line for the office before taking the children to the beach for a game of football. Members of the ship's football team were heard to comment that they wished they had the ball skills of these kids!

The visit was organised by the Royal Navy FA supported by The FA's international programme.
