Will you know what your child is doing online this Christmas?
Visit www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents to find out.
The online football community is huge – and growing. There are currently hundreds of forums, chat-rooms, club sites, fans’ sites, message boards, etc. all dedicated to football.
Some of the more popular sites are receiving 100,000s of unique visits every month and all professional football clubs now have their own websites.
These online resources are increasingly popular with children – in particular, with boys. In fact, in a recent AOL survey, 1 in 5 boys said that football sites are their favourite websites.
We want to ensure that The FA and football clubs have good, up-to-date safety advice across their online environment; in particular in those areas aimed at children and young people.
That's why we are supporting the THINKUKNOW campaign.
Football has always been a great way of bringing together people from different cultures and backgrounds. And online football communities add a new dimension by removing physical and geographic barriers and allowing children and young people to communicate with other football fans around the world.
However, it is important that we understand the risks that children can face online and recognise that sites popular with children will also be popular with paedophiles. This is why the CEOP (Child Exploitation Protection centre) is working with The FA to ensure that young football fans are protected both on the football pitch and online.
