Ken Benham, Sussex FA’s Chief Executive, was presented with a merit award certificate to acknowledge the NSPCC’s grateful appreciation of the voluntary services rendered to the society.

The awards ceremony took place at Arundel Castle at the NSPCC’s AGM, and came as a complete surprise to Ken. “We support the NSPCC very strongly around here – but it was an unexpected award. I was asked to attend the ceremony, but thought it was just because we have strong links with them.”

In previous years the Sussex FA has organised a number of charity events, raising more than £5,000 thanks to annual football matches at their ground in Culver Road.

Kevin Tharme, Sussex FA’s assistant Child Protection Officer, has been heavily involved in the work. “Alongside these charity matches we’ve staged mini-soccer festivals for local teams and have had upwards of 70 children participating each year.

“Members of our staff and Sussex FA councillors have shown their support by participating and assisting in various events, including several sponsored walks.”

Sue Law, Head of Equality and Child Protection said: “Football’s relationship with the NSPCC is a very positive and mutually supportive one. Sussex FA’s commitment, demonstrated through raising this money for the NSPCC is to be applauded, as it is not only directly raising valuable cash, but it is also raising invaluable awareness of the importance of respecting and safeguarding children.”
