“I’m proud that The FA has taken the lead in child protection,” says Mark.  “We want to ensure that football is safe and enjoyable for all children and our commitment to that is absolute.

"
In a way, the success of our child protection work is a reflection of everything we’re doing in the game and, most particularly, at grassroots.

"
Coaches and physios complete child protection courses as part of their qualifications, and that means we’re helping a generation of football people become increasingly aware of the importance of safeguarding children.”

The launch of low-cost Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks in football has also added to The FA’s child protection programme.

“We believe The FA CRB Unit adds to the education and learning work we have developed,” says Tony Pickerin.

“CRB checks are not an end in themselves, but they certainly add to our guidelines on best recruitment practice and mean The FA is doing everything it can to ensure children can play football in the best possible environment.”
