Under the banner of Moving Football Forward, Football for All will be holding two summit meetings on Wednesday 2 November 2005.
The topics up for discussion are Mental Health and Tackling Homophobia.
The Mental Health Summit will look to discuss mental health issues in football and to look at an action plan for the future.
The afternoon summit will discuss homophobia across football, to learn from participants’ experiences at all levels, to hear what has been done and to agree a way forward for the future.
Mental Health Summit
What should football be doing to involve people with mental health issues? What are the challenges? What are the examples of good practice already taking place round the country? Are there any discrimination issues? What about abuse or harassment? How can football help with good mental health?
Guest Speakers
The Mental Health Summit will include contributions from Jeff Davis, The FA’s Disability Development Manager, Ann Edwards, Senior Lecturer in Behavioural Sciences, University of Derby, Ian Banks of The Men’s Health Forum and Paul Stonebrook from The Department for Health. There will also be a chance to hear about the role that football plays in the lives of those affected by mental health and an opportunity to take part in an interactive discussion around the issues.
Tackling Homophobia Summit
What should football be doing to tackle homophobia in football? How should abusive chanting be tackled and is there an issue in the professional game? What lessons can we learn from grassroots football clubs such as Stonewall FC? How can the police be involved? What should referees be doing? This event will set the agenda for football’s campaign against homophobia and ensure a legacy for the programme that creates genuine change in attitudes and perceptions.
Guest Speakers
The Tackling Homophobia Summit will be a mixture of presentations from those working in the gay and lesbian communities and those working in football including Ben Baks of the European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation, Lucy Faulkner, The FA’s Ethics and Sports Equity Manager and Peter Clayton, CEO Middlesex County FA and FA Council member.
