There are lots of football and mental health initiatives taking place across England which may give you some ideas about what you can do if you are looking to set-up and manage a team.

Positive Mental Attitude League

The main aim of the Positive Mental Attitude Football League is to improve the lives of those suffering from mental illness through the use of football.

The aim is to use football as a tool to overcome the stigma and exclusion that exists for those suffering mental illness, through engaging in meaningful activity and with a positive mental attitude.

Additionally, they aim to bridge the gap between hospital and community living, empowering individuals to acquire effective life skills and to regain control of their future.

In less than two years, the PMA London League has achieved 12 registered teams from six London NHS Mental Health Trusts.  For more information on the League, click here

Coping Through Football

Over the past year, the London Playing Fields Foundation has been developing an innovative project entitled 'Coping Through Football' that seeks to demonstrate how two sports charities can work with the statutory health service to create a sustainable recovery model for people with enduring mental health problems.

Working through a Management Group comprising Leyton Orient Community Sports Programme, North East London Mental Health Trust, Waltham Forest Primary Care Trust and Institute of Psychiatry, the project targets 18 - 35-year-olds within the Waltham Forest Community Health Care System.

The project aims to improve the wellbeing of every participant so that they are more able to take charge of their own lives and make a positive contribution to society. To find out more, click here
