Agents' regulations update
Wednesday, 25 April 2007.
The FA has today announced that the new domestic football agents' regulations will now be implemented on 1 September this year.
The new timescale was agreed at The FA Board today and will allow The FA to give further consideration to recent objections raised by a group of agents.
The FA has been disappointed at the timing of certain objections, in view of the extensive consultation process involving all sectors of the game, including agents. We have also sought legal advice in light of a possible legal action by a number of agents seeking to challenge the regulations.
FA Director of Governance Jonathan Hall said: "We believe that the game's interests are best served by taking this course of action. Our primary objective remains to bring in a strong set of regulations which build on the existing ones and address concerns in this area of the game."
There is no intention of abandoning the key principles included in the new regulations.
The Premier League, the Football League and the Sports Minister Richard Caborn also remain supportive of what The FA is trying to achieve.
The date of 1 September has been set as it immediately follows the closing of the summer transfer window on 31 August and therefore avoids two separate systems being operated during the same transfer window.
Significant strides have been made in recent years in regulating this area of the game, including the introduction of a first set of domestic football agents' regulations in January 2006. Bringing in the new regulations remains a priority.
