FA Chairman David Bernstein visits school for launch of Holocaust Educational Trust film

Ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day this Sunday, FA Chairman David Bernstein visited a north London school to see the launch of a new ‘Footballers Remember’ film.

Featuring footage of the England squad visiting the concentration camp at Auschwitz during their time in Poland for EURO 2012 last summer, the video has been jointly produced by the Holocaust Educational Trust and The FA.

It will be distributed to schools and colleges across the country to help spread awareness of the importance of the Holocaust in history.

And with the likes of Joe Hart, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard all featured in the film, there are high hopes that the relevance of the Holocaust will not be lost.

Bernstein made the short trip from Wembley to Park High School in Stanmore, where he was joined by Holocaust survivors Zigi Shipper and Ben Helfgott MBE as the film was being shown to youngsters.

He told FATV: "It's been a very interesting experience for me and I've thought about the Holocaust very closely for many years.

"I was born while this terrible thing was happening so to come to a school like this, with a diverse population of young children, has been very impressive.

"I thought the presentation was excellent and the questions and the interest from some of the kids was very good.

"It's a really worthwhile exercise.”

The FA and HET’s partnership has seen the film produced as an educational resource for secondary schools and colleges and Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of HET is pleased with the result.

"It's really a brief introduction as to what the Holocaust was, but it also shows the footballers' reactions to what they saw,” she added.

"You can't help but be appalled and amazed by what you see at Auschwitz and I think the reactions from the footballers bring home how huge a subject it is.

"We want to bring the Holocaust to young people and we want to make it relevant.

"There's no better way than footballers saying: 'this is important'”
