FA Chairman David Bernstein congratulates former Chief Executive Brian Barwick on rugby role

The Football Association has congratulated former Chief Executive Brian Barwick after he was appointed Chairman of the Rugby Football League (RFL).

Barwick was in charge of The FA between 2005 and 2008, a period which included the opening of the new Wembley Stadium in 2007 and the appointments of Steve McClaren and Fabio Capello.

A former controller of ITV Sport, he also represented The FA on UEFA and FIFA committees.

FA Chairman David Bernstein said: “I would like to congratulate Brian on his new role with the Rugby Football League and wish him all the best at what is a hugely exciting time for the sport.

"He still has close ties to The Football Association and I am sure these will be furthered over what is also a significant year for The FA with our 150th anniversary.

“We are looking forward to Wembley staging the Challenge Cup final once again in August and of course the RFL will be hosting the Rugby League World Cup semi-finals at the national stadium in November."
