Goal-line technology will get its first live test this evening with the Hampshire FA Senior Cup final at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.
The fixture between AFC Totton and Eastleigh FC will see the Hawk-Eye technology put through its paces by independent testers EMPA, following on from a pre-testing day last week. The venue and date for Hawk-Eye’s second test match will be confirmed shortly.
It is hoped such tests, along with those being conducted for the GoalRef system in Denmark, will lead to the International Football Association Board approving the introduction of GLT at its special meeting in Kiev on 2 July. Neale Barry, The Football Association’s Head Of Senior Refereeing Development and part of the IFAB Technical Sub-Committee, will be among the interested observers present this evening.
The two Danish games being used for the GoalRef trial will be on Sunday 20 May when Silkeborg IF play host to SonderjyskE and three days later when FC Nordsjælland and AC Horsens meet on the final matchday of the season.
Only the EMPA observer in the stadium will have access to the GLT system readings. Therefore, should a goal-line incident occur in any of the ‘test’ matches, the system will not be utilised by the match officials, meaning the GLT system will have no influence on the outcome of the matches in which the system is being tested.
