England C boss Paul Fairclough 'shattered' by the sad loss of Mitchell Cole

England C boss Paul Fairclough has paid tribute to Mitchell Cole, who sadly passed away aged 27.

Fairclough said: "The phone call informing me of the tragic death of Mitchell Cole was quite shattering.

"I had several conversations with Mitch during the last couple of months, indeed one last week. He was planning a career as a football agent and he would call me about games and players

"My attention was first drawn to him while he was playing under Mark Stimson at Grays Athletic. I went to Grays to see what the fuss was all about and was blown away by this waif of a lad with blistering pace and a wand of a left foot.

"Mitch followed Mark to Stevenage and it was while playing there I selected him for what is now known as the England C team.

"My initial efforts to play him were thwarted due to his medical condition being flagged up by The FA medical team. Mitch was keen to play for his country and very quickly The FA found a solution that would allow him to play.

"I was obviously made aware of his condition but can honestly say that the moment Mitch pulled on his first England shirt I never gave it another thought.

"He was dynamic and scintillating in everything he did on the pitch.

"Mitch became a fixture in an England shirt playing many games, scoring plenty of goals and picking up numerous trophies on the way.

"Off the pitch Mitch was fun to be around. He had an amazing outlook on life with a wicked sense of humour. He was admired and respected by people of all ages.

"He had time for everyone; from the tiny tots to senior football people. He was uncomplicated, extremely approachable and would chat with all types.

"I cannot believe this bright eyed young man has been taken from us.

"Those of us who were fortunate enough to have been in his company will understand the enormity of his loss.

"My thoughts are with his family, wife and young children."
