In the same group as Team GB, Brazil began their quest for a first football Olympic gold medal in women's football when they defeated Cameroon 5-0, also at the Millennium Stadium.

Goals from Francelle and Renata Costa put the South Americans 2-0 up inside the first ten minutes and it was the same score at half-time.

Cameroon, making their debut in Olympic football, were outclassed and failed to trouble Brazilian goalkeeper Andreia.

Marta, widely regarded as the best female player in the world, scored a third goal for the Samba Queens in the 73rd minute from the penalty spot and substitute Cristiane made it 4-0 five minutes later, after going around goalkeeper Annette Ngo Ndom.

It was Cristiane's 11th Olympic goal, meaning she is now the all-time leading scorer in women's Olympic football, overtaking Birgit Prinz of Germany.

Marta completed Brazil's victory in the 88th minute by tapping the ball into an empty net after Cristiane had beaten Ngo Ndom and provided an accurate cross.
