Sir Trevor Brooking hopes next week’s official opening of St. George’s Park can kick-start a new era for English football at both international and grassroots level.
The FA’s Director of Football Development has been a driving force behind the project ever since it was given approval by The FA Board in 2010.
And with the facility now ready to host Roy Hodgson’s Senior squad ahead of their next World Cup qualifiers, he is keen to see the whole of English football benefit.
Brooking said: “It’s a great milestone for us as an organisation to now have the official opening.
“There have been a few trial runs of the centre and the main feedback has been that almost everyone, without exception, says that the facilities and pitches are absolutely top class.
“When you look at the initial plans for something like this, you hope it’s going to be what you want, but now people have re-located there and are working in such a lovely environment, it gives you great satisfaction.
“Even in these early few weeks, it’s built up everyone’s expectations of what it can achieve so a lot of credit needs to go to a lot of people for that.”
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be in Burton on Tuesday to official unveil St. George’s Park, 24 hours after the arrival of Hodgson and his players, who will train at the centre prior to next Friday’s game with San Marino at Wembley.
And having already hosted England’s Under-21s, U19s, U17s and Women’s squads, Brooking is confident that the complex will prove an ideal home for the Senior squad.
He added: “We’re now at the stage where we’ve had a few teams staying there and the Senior team will be there for the Royal Opening next week.
“That will help people get an initial view that we are up and running and trying to capitalise on all of that excitement and enthusiasm for the future.
“In the end, it will hopefully create its own history, but the idea of it is to become an iconic place for young players to visit and that already seems to be the case for those who have been.
“The key factor is that they’re all going to be desperate to come back again and if we can ingrain them into the development teams as we move forward, they will have that desire and hunger to be part of England teams in the future.”
