MPs Tobias Ellwood and Dr Phillip Lee recall their first coach.

Conservative MPs Tobias Ellwood and Dr Phillip Lee both spoke of their joy at getting a run-out in the annual MPs v Press Lobby game at the weekend, before paying tribute to their first coaches.

The FA’s ‘Football Needs’ campaign hopes to coax more and more people into coaching over the next year or so and Ellwood, the MP for Bournemouth East, believes the importance of a good teacher of the game can make all the difference.

"You always remember a good teacher and you always remember a good coach,” he told FATV, after the game on Sunday.

“I was inspired by football and other sports and we had a great coach at school and without him, I wouldn't be the bad player I am today!”

Meanwhile, Lee, the MP for Bracknell, admitted Sunday’s game was his first in several years but he still sealed that return to action with a goal and was quick to recall the name of the coach who helped ignite his love for the sport in his younger days.

"I remember my first coach was a guy called Andy Mills,” he said. “But I think my footballing abilities and talent peaked at about 11!”
