Joe Hunt has heaped praise on his young Aston Villa side ahead of Sunday’s FA Women’s Premier League Cup Final.
The Midlanders take on last season’s runners-up Leeds United at York City’s Bootham Crescent and the Villa boss has faith in his youthful charges to lift the trophy for the first time.
He said: “We are quite lucky at Villa that we’ve got a lot of quality players coming through our Centre of Excellence. A lot of our girls have played for England at youth level and that speaks for itself.
“When we played Leicester in the group stage the average age of the team was 17, which was unbelievable when you think about it. But it’s the old adage: if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.
“They have had some very good experiences this season, obviously getting to this Final being a big one, so that will stand them in good stead for the future. And if you mix in a few of the older players we have in the squad it makes for a really nice blend.
“And we are playing well at the moment so we are confident we can get a result.”
Villa and Leeds have played out two tight League games this season, with Villa triumphing 2-1 late last year before drawing 1-1 last month.
Hunt’s side were last week accepted into the new FA WSL 2, which will launch in 2014, but before he can contemplate competing in a new League, he must first focus on Sunday’s showpiece.
He added: “One of our targets at the beginning of the season was to do well in the cup competitions so we are very pleased to have reached The Final.
“We know Sunday is going to be difficult. Leeds are probably the best team we have faced this season. We did beat them in the League but for 25-30 minutes I thought they were outstanding.
“I think it will be a really good Final.”
