FAWSL players will be eligible for membership to the PFA from this season

Stars of The FA WSL will be allowed to join the Professional Footballers' Association.

In another positive move for the women's game, which this year celebrates 20 years under the auspices of The FA,  the PFA announced on Friday that all registered players in England's top flight will be eligible for membership from the start of the 2013 season.

And players will also be able to attend the traditional annual PFA Awards dinner in April, which will also include the inaugural PFA Women's Players' Player of the Year Award.

“We are delighted that the PFA is welcoming FAWSL players into its membership,” said Kelly Simmons, The FA’s Director of National Game and Women's Football.

“This it is another great stride for the women’s game as we prepare for an exciting season.

“It comes at a significant time as July will see The FA celebrate 20 years of running women’s football during its 150th Anniversary.”

"I think it is fantastic that women players will now be able to join the PFA - it has been a long time in coming," PFA chairman and FA150 Ambassador Clarke Carlisle told the Press Association.

"It's perfect timing that this is announced on international women's day and it should be good both for female players, who will now have the support of a long-established union."
