Spennymoor Town v Tunbridge Wells
The FA Carlsberg Vase Final
3pm, Saturday 4 May 2013
Tunbridge Wells manager Martin Larkin has praised his players on the eve of the biggest match in the club’s history.
The Kent League side are preparing to take on Spennymoor Town at Wembley in The FA Carlsberg Vase Final and Larkin believes this showpiece match is just reward for all the hard work his team have put in throughout the season.
He said: “The FA Carlsberg Vase is a wonderful competition and reaching The Final has been achieved by a group of players who work hard all day and then give up their evenings to train in the wind, rain and snow with the wish to one day walk out at Wembley.
“To have got all the way to this stage, as 100 per cent amateur, is an achievement I don’t believe will be matched again for a very long time. It is testament to the dedication of the players and the support [assistant manager] Brad Sandeman and I have had from the club to create an environment that has allowed us to keep the local players we have.
“For our players, and those from Spennymoor Town, I believe the stage couldn’t be greater or more deserved.”
Tunbridge Wells have had to negotiate six testing rounds to reach Wembley, including a two-legged Semi-Final against Shildon.
They have also seen off Wantage Town, Binfield, Larkhall Athletic and Hadleigh United, but it is their Fourth Round defeat of last season’s Vase winners, Dunston UTS, that Larkin remembers most fondly.
He explained: “To beat the holders, Dunston UTS, at home is the reason we are in The Final, it gave the players the belief we are good enough to be competing.
“The feeling when Jack Harris scored our winning goal in the 122nd minute at Larkhall will live with me forever, as will the words our captain, Jason Bourne, spoke in the changing room before the first leg at home to Shildon.”
Larkin continued: “The important thing now is to finish the job off and we couldn’t have been paired with a greater opponent in Spennymoor Town. They are a club with a record unmatched in recent seasons. I trust the players in our changing room whole heartedly and I know they won’t let the club down.”
