Sir Trevor Brooking writes about new Government investment in primary school sport

Sir Trevor Brooking, The FA’s Director of Youth Development, has told at first-hand just how significant the new primary School sport plan could be...

I have lost count of the number of times I’ve said it is too late by the time they are eleven years old.

Reaching boys and girls at the youngest possible age is the most important thing in encouraging a sporting habit for life, and that goes for whether they might be setting out to play for England at Wembley or just a weekly game with their mates on Hackney Marshes.

Boys and girls learn their physical literacy, like they learn their reading and writing, in primary school, and that is why today's announcement is so important.

All kids from the age of five and up, whatever their abilities, should be enjoying quality sport and PE both during the school day and, if they want it, after school.

The good news is that now head teachers are going to be given the money, there are some great ways they can spend it.

The FA Tesco Skills Programme has in the last five years provided more than four million places for kids to enjoy high quality football coaching in and around their school.

The programme teaches basic physical literacy, introduces football skills and of course is fun for the kids. Teachers love it and learn and repeat the courses, and parents find it helps their children become healthier and more focused in the rest of their lives.

It is all down to the quality of the coach.

A good coach, like a good teacher, can inspire for a lifetime.

If today's announcement does nothing other than ensure more boys and girls are given the opportunity to be inspired by more and better PE teachers and coaches, then all of English sport will be on to a winner.
