The FA and England Footballers Foundation have donated £40,000 to help Paul Gascoigne

The FA and England Footballers Foundation have added their support to the appeal to help former player Paul Gascoigne with his ongoing alcohol addiction issues by donating a total of £40,000.

The appeal is being led by BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans to cover the costs of Gascoigne’s hospital stay and rehabilitation in the USA.

And The FA Group, through Club England and the England Footballers Foundation, have given £20,000 each to the cause.

Club England Managing Director Adrian Bevington said: “While Paul’s problems with alcohol addiction have been well documented over the years, he continues to be one of English football’s most iconic and loved players, and one of the most gifted midfielders of his generation.

“He was immensely proud to play for England and we all remember his contribution in helping Sir Bobby Robson’s England reach the semi-finals of Italia '90.

“He was also always willing to serve as an ambassador for The FA and English football, supporting The FA’s international development work in Botswana in 2006.

“It is only right that The FA shows solidarity with Paul during this difficult time and the current England squad has been quick to support a player who inspired many of them to take up the game.

“The FA hopes that Gazza can get the assistance he needs in the US and we wish him all the very best over the coming months.”

Gascoigne, who won 57 caps for the Three Lions, is still a footballing hero to many of the current England players and captain Steven Gerrard led the players last week in getting support for him.

He revealed: "We have a committee in the squad, and went to see (Director of Team Operations) Michelle (Farrer)," said Gerrard.

"If the management team think the players can help in any way, we are available and prepared to do so."

Wayne Rooney also sent his wishes to the former Newcastle, Spurs, Lazio, Rangers and Everton player.

Rooney added: “He was a hero of mine growing up and it's sad for everyone to see and read about.

“My best wishes are with him and hopefully he can get himself out of this. I'm sure everyone, every England fan and every Paul Gascoigne fan wishes him the best of luck.

“It's a sad moment for him and so I wish him all the best.”
