Bradford City v Swansea City
Football League Cup Final
4pm, Sunday 24 February 2013
Wembley Stadium
Wembley Stadium is ready for its first cup final of 2013 on Sunday when Swansea City and Bradford City meet under the arch.
Its a special year for the Stadium, which celebrates its 90th anniversary in April, and will be hosting some major matches during the coming months, including The FA Cup with Budweiser and the Champions League Finals in May.
But while Wembley is accustomed to big Finals, for the two teams heading to London for the League Cup Final this weekend it’s a rare experience.
Swansea won promotion to the Premier League in 2011 after beating Reading in the Championship play-off in their only previous visit to the new stadium, though they did feature in Football League Trophy and play-off finals in the 1980s and ‘90s.
Meanwhile, Bradford City’s only day out at Wembley came in the Second Division play-off Final in 1996 when they beat Notts County. The Bantams have, of course, won The FA Cup, but their 1911 triumph came twelve years before Wembley was opened.
League Cup Success on Sunday will be a major achievement for both clubs, and Swans’ boss Michael Laudrup is hoping to complete a trio of landmark victories at Wembley.
As a player, Laudrup played a part in two historic triumphs at the home of English football. In 1983, he was in the first Denmark side to taste victory over England, thanks to Allan Simonsen's penalty.
And he also famously featured for Barcelona's 'Dream Team' when they recorded the Catalan club's first European Cup success against Sampdoria in 1992.
A Swansea victory on Sunday would see the Welsh club secure the first major trophy in their centenary season, and Laudrup said: "I had two very good days at Wembley, although that was the old ground.
"They were two huge results and I hope Sunday will be the third."
He added: "On the pitch everyone knows my five years with Cruyff in Barcelona were great years, there are a lot of things from the training I did with him that I am using now.
"There are also elements from Giovanni Trapattoni while I was in Italy and (former Denmark boss) Sepp Piontek.
"Those are the three I mention when people ask who had the most influence on my career - so we have a German, an Italian and a Dutchman who was from the school of 'Total Football' and was one of the top five players ever.
"They were three very different personalities, and three very different ways of seeing the game, but they had a big impact on me."
