Army FA v FA Legends
Saturday 18 May 2013
Madejski Stadium, Reading FC
Ledley King, Matt Le Tissier, Gary Neville and Dietmar Hamann will be among a star-studded line-up for The FA Legends team to help mark 125 years of Army football.
On 18 May in Reading, England Manager Roy Hodgson will pull together a Legends side that will take on an Army FA team managed by Under-21s boss Stuart Pearce.
The game is part of The Football Association’s wider 150th anniversary year celebrations.
Pearce will also take time out from preparing for Israel this summer to run special training sessions for the Army squad. The charity encounter is just part of a challenging schedule for the Army FA. Later in May a representative tour is planned for Brazil to link up with the England senior squad’s own visit to Rio for their match on 2 June.
All proceeds from this special game will go to Service charities that promote sporting opportunities for soldiers, including those who play sport as part of their rehabilitation. The beneficiaries are The Royal British Legion and the Team Army Sports Foundation. The FA has made a £10,000 donation towards the event.
HRH the Duke of Cambridge has supported the charity initiative by recording a special video message.
He said: “As President of The FA, I am delighted our anniversary year is being used to mark the 125th birthday of Army football.
“My thanks go to all who are supporting this fantastic project. It really promises to be a landmark event in what is a major year for football in this country. Good luck to everyone involved.”
Ex-players already signed up to figure for The FA Legends team are: Jens Lehmann, Gary Neville, Danny Mills, Graeme Le Saux, Ugo Ehiogu, Gareth Southgate, Ledley King, Dietmar Hamann, Matt Le Tissier, Jan Age Fjortoft, Chris Kamara, Paul Merson.
