Denise Lewis believes women’s football could not wish to be “in a better place” than it is right now.
The Olympic gold medallist was a special guest at the recent FA Women’s Awards, a ceremony which celebrated what has been a monumental year for the game.
Team GB’s performances at London 2012 were one of the success stories of the Olympics, the high point being the 1-0 win over Brazil in front of a record 70,584 crowd at Wembley - a record that was beaten by the 80,203 who attended the Olympic Final between USA and Japan.
In September, England qualified for Euro 2013 and what will be their fifth straight appearance at a major tournament, while The FA WSL continued to go from strength to strength.
Lewis said: “We have got some fantastic female role models now so there are no excuses.
“There is a sport for everybody and if yours is football, you can’t want to be in a better place.”
England Manager Roy Hodgson and England Women’s National Coach Hope Powell were also in attendance as some of the biggest names in women’s football over the last 12 months were recognised at the Waldorf Hilton in London.
