VIDEO: Respect rolls on

Latest Respect video outlines programme's success so far.

Since being launched in 2008, The FA’s Respect programme has had a big effect on football at all levels across the country.

More than 42,500 teams and 675 leagues are now signed up to the programme and it has certainly had the desired effect on the game, with cautions for dissent down in 12 out of 16 senior professional leagues this season and in 29 out of 51 County FAs.

Not only this, but there has been a 45 per cent increase in new referees since the Respect programme launched which along with improving the game for all involved, was one of the chief objectives since the start.

The FA’s latest Respect video is now available for you to watch too, as figures from the game such as England Under-21 Head Coach Stuart Pearce, Director of Football Development Sir Trevor Brooking and top flight referee Chris Foy all speak about the positive impact Respect has had.

Following the recent Respect day held at Leicester City for their game with Newcastle United, Foxes skipper also Matt Oakley explains why he feels the game has improved following the introduction of a meeting between officials and captains before matches.

"We're all here to win, but Respect comes first,” he revealed.

"The whole game now seems to have a bit more control about it. The fans see the teams, they see the line-ups and they see the handshaking and it gives the start of the game a bit more presence.”

Over 20,000 were present for the game at the Walkers Stadium at the start of the month, with 5500 supporters holding up Respect cards in the Family Stand to show their support and create a powerful sight before the kick-off.

Foy, who took charge for the game, added: "Respect isn't a campaign, or a gimmick, it's a programme and it's working.

"There has been a 25 per cent increase in my County FA of referees, which can only be good for the game of football.”
