UEFA recognition for Respect

Respect programme lauded at annual Grassroots Day Awards.

The FA’s Respect programme was this week recognised by UEFA as being one of the best development projects in Europe.

The programme, headed by Respect Manager Dermot Collins, finished as the Silver winner of UEFA’s Best Grassroots Project at the annual UEFA Grassroots Day Awards 2010.

Andy Roxborough, UEFA’s Technical Director, commented: “We are seeking to acknowledge the skills and dedication of those who dedicate their time to the grassroots game by recognising the best grassroots leaders, programmes and clubs in Europe.”

The Respect programme was initiated in 2008 as a response to growing concern at all levels that poor behaviour is damaging the game. This has led to the adoption of codes of conduct, Respect handshakes, Designated Spectator Areas, greater use of team captains and increased encouragement to match officials to deal with player dissent.

Coming to the end of its second season Respect has now attracted the support of 750 Leagues and has encouraged declining levels of dissent in both the professional and amateur games. There has also been a 10 per cent increase in the number of qualified Referees after years of declining numbers.

UEFA’s recognition is an indication that the problems that we are seeking to address in England – which are also encountered in other Associations – and some of the measures that we have introduced will have a practical value in other countries.

The marketing of the Respect programme is also under consideration for an Award at the forthcoming Sports Industry Awards which will decided later today.
