The games were Old Meadonians v UCL Academicals, Visa v Abbey, Eastbourne Borough v Carshalton Athletic, Eastbourne Borough Boys v Worthing and Charlton Athletic Women v Everton.
Those five have taken me up to 182 for the season and I think I should just about make 200 by the end of the month. Last season I finished on 202 and the season before that 201, so I’m being quite consistent. Consistently daft, that is. My all-time total is now 4,870 and I hope to reach the magic 5,000 around Christmas. Maybe just after.
I’ve always said that being good with numbers is 90% natural ability and 15% hard work.
Trawling the internet last week I came across something called "The London Football League". Their midweek games are mostly played on the all-weather pitches at Paddington Recreation Centre, close to Maida Vale tube, so I can be home from there in about 15 minutes.
Teams in that league include Athletico Chips, Invisible, Philosophy Football, Conviction, Eastern Promise and Inter Galactic. So I wasn’t expecting too much when I popped along to the Rec on Thursday evening. Chatting to an assistant referee prior to kick-off I found that one pitch was "water based" and one was "sand based" and the former was definitely to be preferred when it came to sliding tackles.
The Premier Division fixture I had come to see, Visa v Abbey, was actually a good standard. It was quite a battle, with a goal from Visa’s No.2 just before the break proving decisive. Abbey had countless chances to level in the second period but even a penalty, hotly disputed, was thumped against the ‘keeper’s right-hand post.
I have to report that the attendance for this game was two. The only other person watching, of West Indian appearance, was – I would guess – a friend of one of the players. The weather that evening was particularly wretched. It rained throughout the game and my hands were so cold, I could hardly hold the umbrella. And this with May only three days away. What a country - I’m making plans to emigrate to Chad in Africa, where it hasn’t rained since 1742.
My regular reader will know that I do like a game where one team, or both teams, need a result to win promotion or a place in the play-offs or to avoid going down. Eastbourne Borough v Carshalton in the Conference South, before 1,325 fans at Priory Lane on Saturday, was such a game. Borough needed a point to be sure of making the play-offs and the Robins had to get three points or be relegated.
Our family lived in Carshalton in the 1950s, when I was too young to take an interest in football, but I saw my first game there in 1962 – an FA Amateur Cup tie against Chobham – and have been to Colston Avenue countless times over the years. So it would’ve disappointing to see them lose on Saturday. In fact, they were outstanding after a difficult first ten minutes and emerged with a 4-1 victory. I could hardly believe how well they played.
Yesterday afternoon saw "The Barber" in the Directors’ Box at Upton Park, the only chap not wearing a tie, for The FA Women’s Cup Final between Charlton and Everton. The girls struggled a bit on what was probably the hottest day of the year but I thought it was a good game. Charlton, who hit the post twice, deserved to lift The Cup. Another Final this evening – the Surrey Senior Cup Final at Woking, with a huge crowd expected.
