Backed by England Head Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and FA Director of Football Development, Trevor Brooking, the resource will enable teachers to capitalise on pupils’ enthusiasm for football and England’s participation in Euro 2004.

Smith gave his backing to the initiative on a visit to Oakwood Secondary School in Rotherham. He said: "It helps kids combine education with physical activity and it looks like they’re having fun. I’d have loved this sort of thing when I was at school."

Following concern over rising obesity levels in children, the new FA pack focuses on science and highlights the importance of physical activity in a healthy lifestyle. The pack also includes a competition for the pupils and teacher with fantastic England-related prizes.

England: Ready for Euro 2004 includes colour posters for display classrooms and easy-to-use worksheets focusing on science.

"I hope as many teachers as possible will use this pack," said England Head Coach Sven. "From my own experience I know that learning and developing skills is always easier when it’s fun and relevant. It’s a principle that applies both to football and the classroom.

Smith took time out to sit amongst a Science class of Year 7 pupils, lead by teacher Andy Smeetham, before seeing a Futsal demonstration under the supervision of Andy Tibbenham.

Tibbenham has seen a real growth in enthusiasm for the game at the school, which is particularly close to his heart, as he also featured for Sheffield Hallam last year, winners of The FA's inaugural National Futsal Championships.

The game is a FIFA endorsed version of small sided football, where the smaller and lower impact balls enable children to have better control, and express their skills on the pitch.

All Secondary Schools downloading the pack will also be urged by The FA to organise a Euro 2004 themed Futsal tournament, and as Smith left the school, he couldn't resist picking up a ball.

One slick pass later and the ball was in the back of the net, scored by a delighted 11 year old pupil; it's not every day that an England striker provides an assist in your school Sports Hall though!
