The Mackem lads will want to mirror the recent performances of Roy Keane’s promotion heroes when they make the 277 mile journey south to Wembley Stadium on 15 July.

For team captain Steven Scott, it won’t be the first time he’s played in the business end of a high-profile tournament. The 29-year-old Sunderland fanatic represented Barbados in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Steven, a café bar owner, took on the likes of the Premiership’s Brad Friedel when he squared up against the USA, Costa Rica and Cuba after his football skills were spotted when holidaying in the Caribbean.

Planning a visit to see his grandmother in her native Barbados, Steven packed his football boots in the hope of getting a game with the locals. After seeing his silky skills, a scout recommended him to the national team and before he knew it, he was facing the game’s elite.

Steven, from Southwick, said: “First playing for Barbados and now this! We just signed up for The FA UMBRO Fives for a laugh – at the start I didn’t even have a full squad of players. We never thought we’d get past the local heat, let alone get to the Wembley Final.”

Although Steven didn’t make it to the World Cup Finals, he recounts his time with the team and hopes to draw on that experience at Wembley.

“When I played for Barbados, we drew with Cuba in a World Cup Qualifying game. The result was one of the best ever for the country, and to top it off we spend the night having a few beers with cricked legend Brian Lara.

"If we win at Wembley, I’ll invite Brian out with the Mackem boys and we’ll show him how to party!”

England Captain and official ambassador for the inaugural FA UMBRO Fives, John Terry said : “What an achievement for Frogs Legs. I’ll be playing at Wembley for the first time in The FA Cup Final, an experience that will be one of the proudest of my career. I wish the boys all the best at Wembley.”

The FA UMBRO Fives is the country’s biggest five-a-side tournament and the only tournament that provides the chance to play at the new Wembley Stadium.

Over 5,000 men’s and women’s teams will compete in regional heats across the country. For more information on how to register to next year, go to www.thefa.com/UMBROFives. Are you up for the challenge?
