Last week’s matches finished like this: Little Common 5 Southwater 0, Eastbourne Town 3 Rye United 2 (Youth), Eastbourne Town 0 Chichester City United 11 (Women), Invisible 0 Abbey 1 and Time Out 6 Visa 0. That’s 48 for the season and 5,180 all told.

As my regular reader will know, "The Barber" is a big fan of the Sussex Intermediate Cup.

I’ve witnessed some truly epic ties over the years: Burgess Hill Town Reserves v Dental Estimates Board (2-5), Bexhill United v Virgin (2-4), Hastings Town Reserves v Buxted (3-3) and many others.

This season’s "First Round" was played on Saturday and I saw Little Common of the Sussex County League’s Division Three take on Southwater of the West Sussex League at Peartree Lane, a ground I hadn’t visited since the ‘80s when my parents lived at Bexhill-on-Sea. The home club used to be called "Albion United" but no one knew where it was.

It surprised me that a match of that magnitude could only attract 12 spectators. Those who stayed away missed a treat. The Southwater left-back bumped into his ‘keeper as he tried to head the ball back to him and Common’s No.8 walked it into the net for a 35th-minute opener.

Then I got chatting to an elderly chap who had only just arrived, having been duped into thinking it was a 3 pm kick-off by the local paper. He kindly said I was "too young to live in Eastbourne".

I saw an extraordinary goal in a youth match on Sunday morning at The Saffrons. Rye’s No.4, the tallest lad on the pitch, whacked a free-kick upfield from a point within his own half that was a good five yards further back than the edge of the centre circle. He must have been 70 yards from Town’s goal.

"Johnno" had a strong breeze behind him and the hapless ‘keeper had the sun in his eyes. The ball didn’t bounce, it flew straight over his head and went in just under the bar. A lady two benches to my right had shrieked: "Oh my God…it’s…going…in!" I counted a crowd of 46 and they all seemed to be chuckling. I’m not sure the Town players were.

After a quick lunch it was back to The Saffrons for the Ladies’ Sussex Senior Cup match with Chichester. No one could say that Town weren’t consistent.

The previous week they’d lost 11-0 at Lewes and on Sunday the scoreline was exactly the same. Chichester’s ‘keeper decided to try her luck up front in the last ten minutes and netted with two firm shots.

I’m not convinced that "Invisible FC" turned up for their London Football League fixture at Maida Vale on Monday night.

But to be fair I did see balls moving about and the net bulging occasionally during the pre-match kick-in. Well, they do wear an all-white strip and perhaps they would be invisible if it snowed.
